Europe’s renewable energy update: Solar PV rebounds in Germany while wind patterns shift across the continent

In the week of December 1, solar photovoltaic (PV) energy production in the German market increased by 8.7% compared to the previous week. In contrast, the markets of Italy, France, and the Iberian Peninsula recorded declines for the second consecutive week. The Portuguese market experienced the largest drop at 33%, followed by a 27% decrease in Spain. Italy saw the smallest reduction at 17%, while France fell by 22%.

Despite these declines, most markets reached record levels for solar PV production on a December day. On Monday, December 1, Spain, Germany, France, and Portugal achieved their highest daily PV generation for December, with 117 GWh, 85 GWh, 49 GWh, and 14 GWh, respectively. Italy set its December solar PV record on Monday, December 8, producing 58 GWh.

Looking ahead to the week of December 8, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects solar energy generation to rebound in Italy, Germany, and Spain.

During the first week of December, wind energy production increased in the Iberian Peninsula and France compared to the previous week. The Portuguese market registered the largest rise at 56%, followed by France at 34% and Spain at 23%. These three markets saw increases for the second consecutive week. By contrast, the German and Italian markets experienced declines of 6.3% and 29%, respectively, with Germany recording drops for the second week in a row.

On Thursday, December 4, the Spanish market achieved the highest daily wind energy production for December in the past four years, reaching 369 GWh.

For the week of December 8, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that the German wind market will reverse its downward trend and record increases, while the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and France are expected to experience declines in wind energy generation, AleaSoft reports.
