Nuclearelectrica has awarded a major contract to the partnership of Concelex and Bog’Art for the expansion of the spent fuel intermediate storage facility at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. Valued at 42.7 million euros, the contract covers the construction of six new storage modules and the installation of a high-capacity gantry crane.
The project includes the completion of modules 18 through 23, as well as the supply and integration of storage cylinders and associated infrastructure. Additional tasks involve fencing, various installation works, and the design, manufacture, assembly, and testing of the new crane system. Construction is set to begin this month and will proceed in phases over a 10-year period, with the first new module scheduled for delivery by December 2026.
The facilities will utilize MACSTOR 400 technology, enhancing storage safety and improving capacity management. For Concelex and Bog’Art, the project continues their longstanding involvement in Romania’s energy sector. Concelex has extensive experience delivering highly technical projects under strict safety standards, while Bog’Art focuses on large-scale infrastructure projects of national importance.
The expansion of the storage facility is closely tied to the refurbishment of Cernavoda’s unit 1, which aims to extend its operational life by 30 years. Additional storage is also needed to support the future operation of units 3 and 4, making this project a crucial step in strengthening Romania’s nuclear energy capabilities.
