Europe: Solar and wind energy trends show mixed performance in late September 2025

During the week of September 22, solar photovoltaic (PV) energy production declined across major European electricity markets, reversing the growth observed the previous week. Germany experienced the largest drop at 34%, followed by Italy and France with decreases of 27% and 26%, respectively. In the Iberian Peninsula, the declines were more moderate, with Spain’s PV generation falling by 7.5% and Portugal’s by 4.3%. For Portugal, this marked the second consecutive week of reduced solar output.

For the week of September 29, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts a reversal of this downward trend, with solar PV generation expected to rise in Italy and Germany, while Spain is forecasted to see a further decline.

Regarding wind energy, production increased in the Iberian Peninsula during the fourth week of September, ending the previous week’s downward trend. Portugal saw a 52% increase in wind generation, and Spain experienced a 16% rise. Notably, on September 28, daily wind output in Portugal reached 74 GWh, a level not seen since late April 2025.

In contrast, wind energy production decreased in other major European markets. Germany and France recorded declines of 35% and 29%, respectively. In Germany, this followed three consecutive weeks of growth, while France saw its third consecutive week of falling wind output. Italy experienced the smallest drop at 4.6%, reversing the upward trend of the prior two weeks.

For the week of September 29, AleaSoft forecasts an increase in wind energy generation in Italy, while Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal are expected to see decreases, AleaSoft reports.
