Serbia: Turkish firm Fortis Energy plans 270 MW solar power plant in Sremska Mitrovica

Turkish company Fortis Energy is set to begin construction of a large solar power plant in Sremska Mitrovica next spring. The project will be situated on private land in the Macva region, along the road to Drenovac.

The construction permit has already been obtained, and approval for energy transmission is expected within the next three months. Following a meeting with company representatives at City Hall, Sremska Mitrovica Mayor Branislav Nedimovic highlighted that the investment has significance beyond the local level, ranking among the largest energy projects in Serbia.

According to local media, the solar facility will cover 300 hectares and have an installed capacity of 270 MW, roughly one fifth of the capacity of the HPP Djerdap. Nedimovic noted that this places it among the five largest renewable energy projects of its kind in Europe. The initiative follows Fortis Energy’s announcement last year of acquiring a 180 MW solar project with a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Sremska Mitrovica.

The planned BESS will have a capacity of 36 MWh, enhancing flexibility and stability in the regional electricity network while supporting Serbia’s ongoing transition toward renewable energy. Once complete, the combined solar and storage facility is expected to become one of the largest of its kind in southeastern Europe.
