European solar and wind energy trends: August declines in solar, mixed wind performance

During the week of August 25, solar photovoltaic (PV) energy production declined across major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. The French and German markets saw the largest decreases, dropping 16% and 10% respectively, marking their second consecutive week of declining solar output. In contrast, the Italian and Spanish markets experienced smaller reductions of 3.5% and 4.5%, extending their respective three-week streaks of decline. Portugal’s solar production fell by 9.9% after reporting increases the previous week.

Looking ahead to the week of September 1, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that solar PV production will rise in Spain but decrease in Germany and Italy.

Regarding wind energy, production increased in most major European markets during the fourth week of August compared to the prior week. France recorded the largest gain with a 47% increase. On the Iberian Peninsula, Spain and Portugal saw increases of 8.0% and 32% respectively, continuing upward trends for the second and third consecutive weeks. Conversely, Germany and Italy experienced reductions in wind generation, with Germany seeing the largest decline at 20% and Italy reducing production by 9.5%.

Notably, the French market achieved its third-highest daily wind energy output for the month of August on Friday, August 29, generating 218 GWh.

For the first week of September, AleaSoft forecasts that wind energy generation will rise in Germany, Spain, and France, while production is expected to decrease in Portugal and Italy, AleaSoft reports.
