Romania: New solar projects advance with over 100 MW in capacity and storage plans

Eximprod Grup is preparing to commission a 65 MW photovoltaic facility in Prahova County, north of Bucharest, with plans to add a battery energy storage system after completion. Meanwhile, Simtel has secured financing to finalize a 52 MW solar power plant in Giurgiu County, located south of Romania’s capital. In addition, a developer in Alba County, Transylvania, has applied for an environmental permit for a similar-scale project that also includes energy storage.

Eximprod Grup recently completed a 49.5 MW grid-connected solar park in Ciorani, Prahova County. The facility, which has a peak capacity of 65 MW, is made up of five units, each with a 9.9 MW grid connection. It is being integrated into the national grid via a 20/110 kV substation and a single metering point. The project is built with 590 W solar panels and features solar trackers. The investment totals EUR 56.2 million, supported by a EUR 13.4 million grant from Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), part of the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

The project was developed by Solar System Project, a company under Eximprod’s ownership, and is located on an 89-hectare site next to another solar plant owned by the same group, which has a 15.5 MW grid connection and 20 MW peak capacity. Eximprod also plans to install a 21 MW battery storage system to enhance the new facility’s performance. Additionally, the company has begun construction on the first of seven foundations for a 38.4 MW wind park in Galați County, located in Western Moldavia.

Giurgiu County is quickly becoming one of Romania’s prominent regions for solar and energy storage development. Simtel has signed financing contracts for a nearly completed 52 MW solar plant, expected to generate 69 GWh of electricity annually. The project has received a ten-year investment loan of EUR 16 million and a bridge loan of EUR 12.2 million from Banca Transilvania, the country’s largest bank. The bridge loan is denominated in Romanian leu and is set to mature in March 2026.
