Slovenia: EIB supports medium-voltage grid modernization with €96 million allocation

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a funding scheme to co-finance projects from the Modernization Fund aimed at upgrading Slovenia’s medium-voltage electricity network. The total value of the scheme is nearly 236 million euros, with Slovenia receiving almost 96 million euros. According to the Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Energy, the EIB’s support will help finance projects designed to improve the transmission and distribution infrastructure of Slovenia’s medium-voltage network.

The funding will be provided in several installments, with the first payment expected to be around 19.7 million euros. The initiative aims to modernize and expand Slovenia’s medium-voltage transmission and distribution system, which includes the construction, upgrade, renovation, and reconstruction of 110/20 kV and 20 kV distribution transformer stations, 110 kV gas-insulated switchgear, distribution substations, and transmission lines. The scheme will also focus on modernizing secondary equipment and digitalizing distribution networks.

The goal of the initiative is to develop a flexible, reliable, and autonomous network capable of meeting market demands and ensuring a stable electricity supply amid rising consumption. The projects selected for co-financing will be based on a public call for the 2024-2030 period, and the Ministry will prioritize investments eligible for funding.
