Serbia advances 1 GW solar power project with battery storage

State-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) has issued a tender for professional supervision and consulting services for the development of self-balancing solar power plants. The contract is valued at approximately 5.5 million euros, with the deadline for applications set for 5 May.

The Serbian Government and EPS have signed an agreement with a consortium of Hyundai Engineering and UGT Renewables to construct large-scale solar power plants equipped with battery storage systems. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with completion expected by 2028, followed by a two-year warranty period.

The total installed solar capacity will be 1 GW, with battery storage units having an installed capacity of 200 MW and an energy storage capacity of 400 MWh. The project will be implemented across multiple municipalities, including Negotin, Zaječar, Lebane, Leskovac, Bujanovac, and Odžaci.

Earlier this year, Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović confirmed that planning and technical documentation for the project were on track. While financial negotiations are still ongoing, she anticipated that construction could begin between late 2025 and early 2026.

In September 2024, the Serbian Government approved the development of a Spatial Plan for the Special Purpose Area to accommodate this strategic initiative. The project will be implemented on a turnkey basis, with the strategic partners responsible for constructing both the solar power plants and the necessary supporting infrastructure.
