Bosnia and Herzegovina: Electricity production declines in January 2025

According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), the country’s gross electricity production in January 2025 totaled 1,402 GWh, marking an 11% decrease compared to 1,573 GWh recorded in January 2024.

Hydropower plants accounted for 34.8% of total electricity generation, while thermal power plants contributed 59.4%. Renewable energy sources, including solar and wind, made up the remaining 5.8%.

Net electricity production from hydropower plants reached 485 GWh, reflecting a 16.7% decline from the same period last year. Thermal power plants generated 744 GWh, down by 11.1% year-on-year. In contrast, electricity production from renewable sources increased by 37.3% to 81 GWh.

Electricity imports rose significantly, increasing by 31% to 431 GWh compared to 329 GWh in January 2024. Meanwhile, electricity exports declined by 13.3%, totaling 581 GWh, down from 670 GWh recorded last year.

In the coal sector, lignite production fell by 7% to 503,000 tons in January 2025, while brown coal production dropped slightly by 1.1%, reaching 449,000 tons.

Natural gas imports saw a modest increase of 3.5%, totaling 34.07 million cubic meters, up from 32.92 million cubic meters in January 2024.
