Greece and Cyprus reaffirm support for Great Sea Interconnector project

The regulatory authorities of Greece and Cyprus have reiterated their support for the Great Sea Interconnector, an electricity link connecting Greece, Cyprus and Israel. During a meeting in Athens, representatives of the Greek Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy, and Water (RAAEY) and the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) met with the project’s promoter, Greek electricity transmission system operator ADMIE.

ADMIE described the discussions as highly productive, emphasizing the project’s strategic importance for the participating countries and the European Union. Both regulatory bodies requested detailed updates on the project’s progress and assured ADMIE of their commitment to its successful completion.

As part of their backing, RAAEY and CERA submitted letters of support to the European Commission, advocating for the project’s continued inclusion in the lists of Projects of Common Interest (PCI) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI). The review of projects under the PCI/PMI framework coincided with the 5th Meeting of Trans-European Networks for Energy (TEN-E) Regional Groups in Brussels, focusing on electricity and offshore infrastructure.

Despite this support, ADMIE announced earlier in March that the Greece-Cyprus interconnection had been put on hold due to rising geopolitical tensions and financial difficulties.
