European solar and wind energy production trends: March 10-17 overview

During the week of March 10, solar photovoltaic energy production saw a decrease in several major European electricity markets compared to the previous week, although the Iberian Peninsula experienced an increase. In Spain and Portugal, photovoltaic energy production rose by 45% and 33%, respectively, reversing the declines observed the week before. However, in other markets, the upward trend of solar energy production from the prior week was reversed, with Germany, Italy, and France seeing drops of 47%, 26%, and 25%, respectively.

On March 14, the Portuguese market set a new record for solar photovoltaic energy production for the month of March, generating 21 GWh. This figure was last achieved in late August 2024.

Looking ahead to the week of March 17, solar energy production is expected to rise in Germany, reversing the decline of the previous week, while a decrease is anticipated in both Italy and Spain, according to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s solar energy predictions.

In terms of wind energy, production also decreased week-on-week across most major European markets, reversing the upward trend seen the prior week. The largest declines were in Portugal and Germany, with reductions of 42% and 41%, respectively. France experienced the smallest drop at 19%. However, Italy saw a significant 95% increase in wind energy production, reversing its previous decline.

AleaSoft’s wind energy forecasts for the week of March 17 indicate that wind energy production will rise in Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal, but will decrease in Italy, AleaSoft reports.
