Greek electricity market shifts: Protergia and Zenith gain market share, PPC sees decline

Data from Greece’s regulatory authority for energy (RAAEY) reveals that the market rankings among independent electricity suppliers in the country shifted between September and November of last year.

Public Power Corporation (PPC), the state-owned dominant player, saw a slight decline in its market share, with its number of electricity meters falling to 5,530,755 (71.82%) from 5,573,594 (72.26%) at the end of 2023.

Protergia, the leading independent supplier, increased its market share, serving 536,075 electricity meters (6.94%), up from 472,393 (6.12%) in 2023. This growth does not yet include the share of Volterra, which Protergia recently acquired.

Zenith, which moved into second place among independent suppliers in January 2024, now serves 337,931 electricity meters (4.38%), compared to 307,993 (3.99%) at the end of 2023. Heron surpassed Elpedison to take third place, with 325,060 electricity meters (4.21%), up from 301,449 (3.91%). Elpedison dropped to fourth, serving 293,600 electricity meters (3.8%), down from 315,329 (4.09%) in 2023.

These changes were mainly seen in the low-voltage segment, which accounts for most electricity meters and has had a significant impact on market shares. In the medium-voltage segment, PPC added 15 electricity meters, increasing its total to 9,712, but its market share dropped from 56.11% to 53.57%. Protergia gained 343 new electricity meters in this category, raising its market share from 13.56% to 14.82%.
