Greece: Motor Oil Group and Terna Energy finalize deal for first offshore wind farm

Motor Oil Group, through its subsidiary MORE, and Terna Energy have announced the completion of procedures for Motor Oil to acquire a 50% stake in Aeolian Provata Traianoupoleos, a subsidiary of Terna Energy. This company holds the rights to develop a 400 MW offshore wind farm south of Alexandroupoli, which will be Greece’s first offshore wind farm.

The project, set to be completed by the end of the decade, is expected to play a key role in advancing Greece’s National Offshore Wind Farm Development Program. It will showcase the economic and environmental advantages of offshore wind energy while demonstrating its compatibility with other major sectors like shipping and tourism.

The Alexandroupoli region will also host two pilot offshore wind projects, with one bypassing the typical tender process required for other national projects. The second project, a 216 MW wind farm, is now owned by PPC after being acquired from the Copelouzos and Samaras groups. Together, the two projects will provide around 600 MW of capacity. During the construction phase, the projects will be developed jointly, including shared wind, geophysical, and geotechnical studies to enhance efficiency. The companies have completed the necessary studies and are preparing to submit them to the Energy Ministry, awaiting approval for operating aid from the European Commission.

This joint venture builds on the existing partnership between Motor Oil and Terna Energy, which has already collaborated on the construction of an 877 MW gas-fired power plant in Komotini.
