Greece: Thermoilektriki Komotinis CHP plant begins trial operations ahead of 2025 launch

The combined heat and power plant Thermoilektriki Komotinis, located in northeastern Greece, has entered trial operations in early December. The plant, which has an installed capacity of 877 MW, was co-developed by GEK-TERNA and Motor Oil. Full commercial operations are expected to begin after the first quarter of 2025.

During the initial testing phase, the plant generated 10 MW, with output steadily increasing in the following days. No technical issues have been reported so far. The three-month testing period will involve gradually increasing the plant’s load. If this process is completed smoothly, the facility will transition to full commercial operation. During the trial phase, the plant may also provide support to the electricity grid in the event of supply challenges.

With a total investment of 375 million euros, the plant is equipped with a Siemens HL-class turbine. Although it is initially designed to operate on natural gas, the facility has been built with the flexibility to integrate hydrogen into its energy mix in the future.
