Bosnia and Herzegovina: Energy production declines in September 2024, while imports rise

In September 2024, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s gross electricity production totaled 1,047 GWh, marking a decline from 1,147 GWh in the same month the previous year. Hydropower plants contributed 19.4% of the total production, generating 202 GWh, which represents a 21.4% drop compared to September 2023. Thermal power plants accounted for the largest share, producing 711 GWh, a decrease of 6.1% from the previous year. Production from renewable sources, including wind and solar, reached 55 GWh, comprising 5.3% of the total electricity production.

Electricity imports saw a significant rise of 30%, increasing to 347 GWh in September 2024, compared to 267 GWh in the same month of 2023. On the other hand, electricity exports experienced a slight decline of 1.8%, totaling 488 GWh, down from 497 GWh in September 2023.

In terms of coal production, lignite output increased by 2.8%, reaching 523,000 tons, while the production of brown coal fell by 13.9%, totaling 502,000 tons. Additionally, natural gas imports grew by 14.8%, amounting to 10.4 million cubic meters, compared to 9.06 million cubic meters in September 2023.

These figures highlight a shift in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy landscape, with a notable reliance on thermal power and natural gas imports, while renewable energy production remains a smaller contributor to the overall mix.
