Serbia: Flue gas desulfurization facility at TPP Nikola Tesla B set for completion in early 2025

The completion of the flue gas desulfurization facility at the coal-fired thermal power plant Nikola Tesla B (TENT B) is scheduled for the first half of next year. According to a statement from the Serbian Government, this facility is expected to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by nearly 30 times, significantly improving air quality and aligning with both EU and Serbian environmental standards.

The project, valued at €220 million, aims to ensure that over 90% of thermal power plants operated by the state-owned utility EPS will meet environmental criteria upon completion. A similar facility was successfully completed at TENT A earlier this year, further enhancing air quality.

In addition to the desulfurization project, the construction of a wastewater treatment plant at TENT B is nearing completion, underscoring EPS’s commitment to environmental protection. This desulfurization initiative is being executed in collaboration with Japan’s Mitsubishi Power, whose expertise is pivotal in the decarbonization of Serbia’s energy sector.

Once operational, the facility will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions to below 130 milligrams per cubic meter and particulate matter emissions to below 20 milligrams per cubic meter. The desulfurization process will also produce gypsum, with an anticipated annual output of around 300,000 tons.
