Europe: Electricity demand rises, driven by recovery in Germany

In the week of October 7, electricity demand rose in most major European markets compared to the previous week. The German market saw the largest increase at 6.9%, driven by a recovery in demand following the public holiday on Thursday, October 3, which marked German Unity Day. The French and Dutch markets experienced the smallest gains, with increases of 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively. Demand in Belgium, Italy, and the UK rose between 1.5% and 2.3%. Notably, the French and British markets saw demand growth for the fourth consecutive week, while Belgium and the Netherlands reported increases for the second and third weeks, respectively.

Conversely, the Iberian Peninsula experienced a decline in demand. Portugal recorded the largest drop at 4.0%, while Spain saw a decrease of 1.4%. The national holiday in Spain on October 12, known as Hispanic Day, contributed to this decline.

Average temperatures rose in most of the analyzed markets, with increases ranging from 1.0 °C in Italy to 1.9 °C in Germany. However, Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal reported temperature decreases of 1.2 °C, 1.5 °C, and 1.6 °C, respectively.

For the week of October 14, demand forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest that demand will increase in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain, while it is expected to decline in France, Portugal, Germany, and Belgium, AleaSoft reports.
