Montenegro: EBRD plans €18 million loan for new transmission line to boost renewable energy integration

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering a loan of up to 18 million euros for the construction of a new 110 kV Herceg Novi – Vilusi overhead transmission line in southwestern Montenegro, along with associated substations. This project aims to facilitate the integration of future renewable energy capacities in the region.

According to the EBRD, the loan will be extended to Montenegrin electricity transmission system operator CGES and will finance the construction of the 38.5-kilometer transmission line, the extension of a 110 kV switchyard at the Herceg Novi substation, and the refurbishment of the Vilusi substation.

The primary goal of the project is to enhance the high voltage transmission network capacity, which is essential for integrating a significant number of renewable energy power plants that are currently in the preliminary development stages by private entities. The EBRD Board is set to make a decision regarding the loan on December 4.
