Montenegro to tender oil storage facility upgrades and offshore exploration

Montenegrin Minister of Mining Admir Sahmanovic has announced plans to launch a tender for the reconstruction of oil storage facilities in the coastal city of Bar. This initiative is considered a top priority by the government, and the Ministry is currently preparing the necessary tender documentation. The upgrade of these facilities is crucial for Montenegro to ensure sufficient oil reserves in the near future.

In addition to the Bar facilities, Montenegro’s oil storage infrastructure in Bijelo Polje, located in the northern part of the country, also requires improvements.

Minister Sahmanovic further revealed that the Ministry is preparing a public invitation for a 3D offshore oil and gas exploration tender. The goal is to gather data on potential reserves in this sector, a task that Montenegro cannot finance on its own. The country aims to attract interest from reputable companies to support this exploration effort.

As of 2016, Montenegro’s total liquid fuel storage capacity was 205,000 cubic meters across six terminals: 124,800 cubic meters in Bar, 26,500 in Bijelo Polje, 22,400 in Lipci, 21,000 in Cerovo, 8,000 in Tivat, and 2,000 in Podgorica. However, only 87,000 cubic meters of this capacity were operational at that time.
