Romania: Electricity distributor DEER to invest €100 million annually in network modernization

Mihaela Sucia, CEO of Distributie Energie Electrica Romania (DEER), announced that the company will invest approximately 100 million euros each year to modernize its electricity distribution network. Despite these substantial investments, Sucia highlighted the need for even greater funding to fully upgrade the network.

Sucia emphasized the critical role of robust transmission and distribution systems in the energy transition, noting that electricity generation and consumption often occur at different locations. Effective distribution infrastructure is essential to ensure reliable energy delivery and meet the demands of future energy projects.

DEER serves 18 counties in Romania, with over 80% of its network constructed before the year 2000. This aging infrastructure requires significant modernization. Although the company’s annual investment of 100 million euros is considerable, it is not sufficient to address all the network’s needs.

The company is focused on maintaining reliable electricity distribution and meeting the standards set by the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) regarding service interruptions. Additionally, DEER is pursuing future projects and has submitted 30 proposals for European funding through the Modernization Fund. Contracts worth over 600 million euros have already been signed for projects that are set to commence.
