Greece: Conversion of Ptolemaida V to gas not financially viable

According to the latest decarbonization timetable from PPC, the financial conditions for gas-fired electricity generation currently do not support converting Ptolemaida’s Unit V from lignite to gas as initially planned. As a result, the facility may need to be withdrawn by 2026 rather than continuing its operation beyond that date.

PPC indicates that, given the current prices for natural gas and CO2 emissions, it is economically unviable to convert Ptolemaida V, which was officially commissioned last winter. The facility was originally intended to operate as a low-emitting lignite-fired power plant until 2028, when Greece aims to phase out coal for electricity generation entirely.

Following consultations with the electricity transmission system operator ADMIE, PPC confirmed that the Agios Dimitrios I and Agios Dimitrios II power plants will remain operational until August this year. Meanwhile, the coal-fired Meliti and Megalopoli IV power plants are scheduled for decommissioning at the end of 2024, and Agios Dimitrios III, IV, and V are set to be withdrawn in 2025.
