Romania wants to delay coal phase-out at EC Oltenia

Romanian Government will ask the European Commission to accept amendments to the calendar drafted for replacing the coal-fired power plants at Energy Complex Oltenia, according to Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja said that. He said that EC Olteania needs at least additional year and a half to replace its coal-fired capacities with alternative means of electricity generation.

According to restructuring plan, which was approved by the European Commission, all coal-fired power plants operated by EC Oltenai have to be shut down by 2026, with a portion of the capacity kept until 2032 as a strategic reserves in case of emergencies.

However, the natural gas-fired and solar projects carried out by EC Oltenia to replace coal-fired capacity, have experienced delays of roughly one year and a half.
