Bulgaria: TPP Bobov Dol recorded a 3 million euros profit in the first six months

Thermal power plant Bobov Dol recorded a net profit of 3 million euros in the first six months of 2023, compared to a net loss of 4.75 million euros in the same period in 2022. At the same time, revenues rose to 120.8 million euros, compared to 36.5 million euros in the same period last year. Total expenditures grew significantly, to 117.8 million euros, compared to 39.4 million euros a year earlier.

In February, TPP Bobov Dol launched the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant on the ash disposal site. The project is worth 51 million euros and the plant is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The project is a part of the broader transformation of the power plant’s operation, which also includes the construction of a 7 MW biogas power plant, expected to be launched in 2023.

In 2023, TPP Bobov Dol is also expected to complete the construction of a gas pipeline and connect to the national gas transmission network, which will allow the plant’s switch from coal to natural gas. TPP Bobov Dol currently has three coal-fired units with a combined installed capacity of 630 MW. However, only two of them are operational at the same time.

The switch to natural gas will include an additional five cogeneration units with a combined capacity of 42 MW, which should be completed by the end of 2024. There is also a concept project that includes the installation of hybrid turbines running on natural gas and hydrogen mixture.
