Bulgaria, Government approved derogation for the purchase of spare parts for NPP Kozloduy

Bulgarian Council of Ministers approved a derogation from the EU sanctions against Russia enabling the country’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy to purchase the materials, spare parts and services it needs for the normal carrying out of the facility’s planned annual maintenance and operation.

Caretaker Minister of Energy Rossen Hristov said that the derogation is from a EU regulation prohibiting the import of particular parts, materials and services from Russia in connection with the war in Ukraine, adding that this decision is of critical significance for the security of NPP Kozloduy.

He said that the materials, services and parts in question are those for which the authorities have not yet found alternative suppliers. However, the Government will carry on the process of selecting new counterparties, so as to be absolutely secure in the long term.

It is also overstocking on these materials and parts for which t was unable to find alternative supplies in order to ensure the uninterrupted operation of NPP Kozloduy in the coming years.
