SEE Region, Increase in wind power production by 75 percent, to 2.24 TWh in the 10th week

Electricity production from variable renewable energy sources in Southeast Europe increased sharply during the 10th week (March 6 – 12), by as much as 60 percent compared to the ninth week and amounted to 3 TWh. This growth was largely contributed by a strong increase in the production of wind farms.

The high wind speed in the central and southern part of the SEE region influenced the growth of wind farm production by as much as 75 percent compared to the ninth week, to a total of 2.24 TWh.

All markets in the region, except Croatia, recorded higher wind energy production, with Italy and Turkey recording the largest percentage increases of 142 percent and 76 percent, respectively, to 802 GWh and 938 GWh. In addition, wind energy production in Bulgaria and Greece recorded significant growth of 53 percent and 44 percent, respectively, to 27 GWh and 243 GWh.

On the other hand, Croatia was the only country in the region that recorded a smaller contribution from wind, by 31 percent. The production of Croatian wind power plants amounted to 46 GWh in the 10th week.

The production of solar energy in the region of Southeast Europe recorded a significant growth of 28 percent, to a total of 761 GWh, with almost all countries in the region achieving an increase in solar production, with the exception of Hungary, which recorded a minimal drop in production of 1 percent.

Bulgaria and Romania achieved an increase in the production of solar energy by 202 percent and 70 percent, respectively. Greece and Italy also saw increases in solar production by 36 percent and 26 percent respectively.

Variable renewable energy production in Greece increased significantly during the 10th week compared to the previous week by a total of 41 percent, to 369 GWh, mainly thanks to higher solar radiation.
