Region, Ukraine doubles electricity exports to Romania, Hungary and Slovakia

Ukraine plans to increase electricity exports to Romania, Hungary and Slovakia by the end of 2022 by an additional 200-300 MW, compared to the current 300 MW, while exports to Poland will increase by over 1,000 MW, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Smihal announced .

In the night between Monday and Tuesday, at 12:40 p.m., Romania imported 152 MW and exported 208 MW to Ukraine, where several regions were left without power after the Russian army attacked civilian infrastructure.

In the context of the Russian invasion that began at the end of February, Ukraine, together with Moldova, disconnected from the electricity grid that connected it to Russia. In mid-March, the Ukrainian network was connected to the European one.

Since then, Ukraine has been exporting between 400 and 700 MW of electricity per day to the EU and Moldova, and Smihal now plans to increase his country’s exports to the EU several times.

Ukraine operates nuclear power plants with a total capacity of over 14 GW. However, six reactors at the Zaporozhye nuclear plant have been under the control of Russian troops since March.

Electricity consumption in Ukraine has fallen significantly since the beginning of the Russian invasion, which has led to an increase in electricity export capacity. The significant increase in exports to Poland is explained by the renovation and commissioning of the Khmelnytskyi-Zhesov NPP transmission line, which the Ukrainian Prime Minister recently discussed with his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki in Kyiv.
