Greece: PPC could increase lignite production by 43%

Greece’s Elektroprivreda PPC has the capacity to increase lignite production to as much as 15 million tonnes a year, from 10.5 million tonnes currently, an increase of 43% to full capacity, in the event of a cut in Russian natural gas supplies, according to an updated annual mining plan. the company submitted to the Ministry of Energy.

However, even this increased production is not enough to fill the huge gap left by the reduction of Russian natural gas supplies.

Lignite electricity production in the country could increase to 6.5 TWh per year, compared to the current plan of 4.5 TWh, according to the utility company.

However, PPC would have to accelerate the development of a series of projects to increase productivity in its lignite mines and increase lignite stocks for its seven power plants on this fuel – the five Agios Dimitrios blocks, as well as Meliti and Megalopoli.

The goal of the annual plan is to increase lignite stocks in each of the five Agios Dimitrios power plants from 1.2 million tons to 1.75 million tons, while increasing the volume in Melitia to 300,000 tons, from 220,000 tons this month, as well as stocks in Megalopolis to 500,000 tons , compared to 270,000 tons.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to comment on the alternative on Wednesday, given Russia’s threat, during the official commissioning of a large solar power plant developed by Hellenic Petroleum ELPE in Livera, northern Greece. With a capacity of 204 MW, this PV power plant is one of the largest in Europe.
