Montenegro, EPCG agrees to export coal to Serbia

The Electric Power Industry of Serbia (EPS) will buy coal from the Pljevlja Coal Mine, which is owned by the Electric Power Industry of Montenegro (EPCG), the Pljevlja Coal Mine announced.

The Pljevlja mine should deliver about 300,000 tons of coal to EPS this year.

By the way, in 2020, EPS produced about 39 million tons of coal to supply thermal power plants, which produced about 70 percent of the country’s electricity. However, during this winter, EPS had big problems in the production of electricity in thermal power plants, and one of the reasons was the poor quality of coal.

As the Pljevlja Coal Mine announced, at the invitation of the director of EPS Miroslav Tomašević, a meeting was held with the representatives of the Pljevlja Mine, the executive director Milan Lekić and the director of the Sector for Development and Investments Jagoš Gomilanović.

The calorific value of coal for which EPS is interested ranges from 7,500 to 8,000 kJ / kg. Having in mind the quality of coal that is delivered to the main buyer of coal – Thermal Power Plant Pljevlja, it belongs to the coal of lower quality.

The mine states that the price and transport will be officially defined in the coming period. As it is stated, Executive Director Lekić said that the price will certainly not be lower in relation to the current price at which coal is distributed at TPP Pljevlja, although it is coal of lower quality compared to the one delivered to this Montenegrin power plant.

During this calendar year, it was agreed in principle to deliver about 300,000 tons of coal, with a tendency to increase that amount in the future, said Lekić, adding that about 500 tons of coal will be delivered on a daily basis.

Transport costs to Prijepolje or Lazarevac, depending on the final decision on where the coal will be distributed, will be fully covered by EPS.

Through this cooperation, we will provide the market for lower quality coals and make a significant business step towards the ecological reconstruction and overhaul of TPP Pljevlja, said Lekić.
