Greek electricity distribution system operator DEDDIE has recently launched a project for upgrading low and medium-voltage substations around the country in order to facilitate new RES unit connections to the network.
The project is expected to allow the connection of 1,750 MW in new RES installed capacity.
So far, DEDDIE has completed the refurbishment of two out of 33 planned substations within the project. All contracts for the substation upgrades are expected to have been awarded by the fourth quarter in 2023, while all work is scheduled to be completed by the fourth quarter in 2025. The project’s cost amounts to 30 million euros, of which 12 million is provided through the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
However, the 1,750 MW in new RES connections represents only 40 % of 4,640 MW in RES capacity estimated to be needed for the National Energy and Climate Plan to reach its energy-mix goals.
