Romania, Romanian net coal production in the first eight months of the year mounted to 2.118 million tons of oil equivalent

According to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Romanian net coal production in the first eight months of the year amounted to 2.118 million tons of oil equivalent, which is by 22.9 % or 394,800 tons of oil equivalent higher than in the same period in 2020.

In the same period, Romania imported 295,900 tons of oil equivalent of coal, which is by 15.2 % or 39,100 tons of oil equivalent more than last year.

The National Commission for Strategy and Forecast estimates coal production of 3.020 million tons of oil equivalent for 2021, increasing by 9.9 % compared to 2020, and imports of 370,000 tons of oil equivalent, which is a decrease by 12.1 %. For 2022, production of 2.935 million tons of oil equivalent is forecasted (- 2.8 %), and imports of 270,000 tons of oil equivalent (- 27 %).

According to the National Energy Strategy, total coal production will decrease from 32 TWh in 2030 to 12 TWh in 2050, following the downward trend of coal in the energy mix (45 TWh in 2020).

For 2030, the modeling results in the chosen optimal scenario show that the energy produced from coal will register a slight decrease, to 15.8 TWh, and will have a share of 20.6 % in the country’s energy mix.
