Bulgaria: Gas-fired units to be built at TPP Varna

Bulgarian thermal power plant Varna has three operational gas-fired units with installed capacity of 210 MW each. The other three units were decommissioned in 2017.

TPP Varna said that it plans to invest 450 million euros in the construction of two steam-gas combined cycle 275 MW units which will replace its decommissioned coal-fired units.

According to the statement from the company, the two gas-fired units should be commissioned by 2025. It has already signed a contract for the development of a technical-economic model for the project with three Russian companies – industrial valve products manufacturer Rakityanski Armaturny Zavod, steel pipe manufacturer Trubnaya Metallurgicheskaya Kompaniya and power engineering company Atomenergomash. Each of the new steam-gas units will be equipped with a Siemens SGT5-2000E gas turbine, combined with a steam turbine, as well as the relevant electrical and auxiliary equipment.

In October 2017, Czech CEZ announced that it has sold its Bulgarian coal-fired thermal power plant, which was out of operation at the moment, to local company SIGDA. SIGDA’s offer was evaluated as best of all received in the tender, while the final purchase price will be determined as of closing of the transaction based on the level of working capital. In 2018, leader of the Bulgarian DPS party Ahmed Dogan has acquired 70 % stake in logistics company SIGDA.
