Croatia: An agreement on HPP Senj reconstruction

HPP Senj was commissioned in 1965. It has installed capacity of 216 MW and average annual electricity generation of 970 GWh or some 20 % of hydro production in Croatia.

Croatian state-owned power utility HEP and several companies within the Koncar Group have signed an agreement on the replacement of primary equipment at hydropower plant Senj, worth some 44 million euros. The agreement is a part of a broader project for HPP Senj reconstruction worth a total of 74 million euros, which will increase its installed capacity by 20 MW.

The agreement envisages the replacement of primary equipment for all three generators at HPP Senj. The works on the reconstruction will start next year and should be completed in 2026. So far, HEP spent around 11 million euros on HPP Senj reconstruction, which will extend the plant’s operational life by 50 years. HEP’s CEO Frane Barbaric said that the reconstruction project mainly involves local companies, adding that HEP invested more than 210 million euros in the reconstruction of its hydropower plants since 2021, with additional 300 million euros planned. So far three HPPs have been revitalized, while the projects for the revitalization of five HPPs are currently ongoing. Besides HPP Senj, most notable is the reconstruction of HPP Varazdin worth 84 million euros and the reconstruction of HPP Orlovac worth 68 million euros.
