Romania: January electricity consumption decreased

Electricity consumption in Romania in January 2021 amounted to 4.54 TWh, which is 8.1 % less compared to the same month in 2020, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS). The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 3.22 TWh, which is 12.4 % less compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 1.27 TWh, which is a 5.7 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 16.9 % amounting to some 53 GWh. Total electricity production reached 5.18 TWh in January, which is 4 % less than in the same month last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 16.6 % and reached 2.1 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 17.8 % to 1.29 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 2.3 % to 0.92 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 25.1 % compared to January 2020, reaching 810 GWh. Solar power production decreased by 31.7 % to 55.9 GWh. Electricity exports in January 2021 amounted to 555.1 GWh, which is by 4.8 % lower compared to the same month in 2020. At the same time electricity imports decreased by 20.3 % and amounted to 634.4 GWh. Total production of primary energy resources in the first month of 2021 amounted to 1,568 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 9.1 % less than in 2020. Coal production reached 235.8 million tons of oil equivalent (- 17.8 %), oil production reached 263.9 million tons of oil equivalent (- 6.8 %), while production of natural gas reached 656.8 million tons of oil equivalent (- 11.2 %).
