Romania: ANRE removes more inoperable licensed capacities

Since the end of 2018, the National Regulatory Authority for Energy (ANRE) removed a total capacity of 4,400 non-functional MW, which decreased the country’s total available installed capacity from 23,983 MW to 19,583 MW.

ANRE said that it has removed another 1,010 MW of inoperable capacities from licenses issued to producers of electricity. The statement from the regulator said that ANRE considers that it is necessary for the process of removing inoperable electricity generation capacities from producers’ licenses to continue in order to provide a real, clear picture of the production sources available in the national energy system. Maintaining licensed production capacities that no longer work discourages new investments in electricity production in Romania. ANRE considers that the elimination of non-functional capacities from the license should be accompanied by a process financed as much as possible from European funds, of installation of new capacities, which should contribute to the fulfillment of the objectives set by the European Union of reducing pollutant emissions, increasing the share of renewable sources in gross energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency.
