Slovenia: HPPs’ excellent results in 2021

By 25 January 2021, Slovenian state-owned energy company’s – HSE’s hydropower plants, which operate under the auspices of the companies Dravske Elektrarne Maribor (DEM), Soske Elektrarne Nova Gorica (SENG) and Hidroelektrarne na Spodnji Savi (HESS), have produced 256 GWh of electricity and by doing so, they have already exceeded the plan for January by 17 %, slightly less than a week before the end of the month.

This year, the hydrological conditions were the most favorable to HPPs operated by SENG, which is already 39 % above the plan. HESS exceeded the plan by 16 %, and DEM by 13 %. What contributed to the high production were the favorable hydrological conditions, highly available production infrastructure (despite the situation being aggravated by the coronavirus epidemic and related measures) and favorable market conditions. Hydrological projections for the first half of 2021 remain favorable due to the ample snow cover and new precipitation that is forecast.

HSE concluded 2020 with 7,884 GWh of electricity produced, which is 101 % of the planned production. Hydropower plants produced 4,243 GWh or 54 % of the entire electricity produced by the HSE Group. Annual plans in 2020 were exceeded by DEM by as much as 20 %, and SENG by 4 %.
