Bosnia and Herzegovina: Higher amount of electricity exports in first half of 2020

In the first half of this year, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 3.4 TWh of electricity worth some 146 million euros, which is 20 % more than in the same period in 2019, when electricity exports amounted to 2.85 TWh, according to BiH CIGRE (International Council on Large Electric Systems) President Edhem Bicakcic.

However, the increase in the volume of electricity exports was not accompanied by a financial result, which is lower by 3 %, mainly caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which led to a drop in consumption and falling electricity prices on exchanges. The average export price was 43 euros/MWh, which is a decrease of 19 % compared to the same period in 2019. In the first half of 2020, 1.3 TWh was imported in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is a decrease in imports of electricity by 12 %, compared to the same period last year. When looking at financial indicators for this period, BIH spent around 20 million euros on electricity imports, which compared to 97 million euros in the same period last year represents a decrease of 79 %. Commenting on the export-import results of BiH electricity producers, Bicakcic noted that this year’s import prices are significantly lower and averaged around 15 EUR/MWh. The reason for such low price lies is in a decline in consumption and an increase in supply, especially of electricity produced from renewable sources due to the need for balancing.
