Bosnia and Herzegovina: Agreement on hydrogeological explorations near Sarajevo

An agreement between the Environmental Protection Fund of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) and Toplana Sarajevo (provider of district heating services in the capital) was signed on the allocation of financial resources within the project for hydrogeological research of thermal waters in the area of Ilidza for the needs of district heating of Toplana Sarajevo.

The ultimate goal of the project is the use of renewable sources in the heating plant of Toplana Sarajevo, and the funds in the amount of about 18,000 euros will be used for the preparation of project documentation.

If the hydrogeological tests are justified through the first phase of this project and a geothermal source of appropriate temperature is discovered, the construction of a geothermal well on which the heating plants will have a concession and use geothermal energy for heating will continue.

If all goes in accordance to plans, a new method of heating will be introduced which, among other things, excludes the use of natural gas in the production of thermal energy, which contributes to better air quality of the city.
