Hungary and Serbia plan to increase interconnection capacity

By establishing a regional electricity exchange, Hungary and Serbia plan to double their electricity interconnection capacity, said Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto after the meeting with Serbian Minister of Energy and Mining Aleksandar Antic.

According to Minister Szijjarto, excess electricity generated by the new blocks of nuclear power plant Paks could be exported to Serbia, while Hungary can also count on Serbia’s hydropower capacities.

In February 2018, Serbian electricity exchange SEEPEX and its Hungarian counterpart HUPX have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on merging their spot market businesses and create a cross-regional electricity exchange in central and southeastern Europe. EPEX SPOT, EMS and MAVIR will act as founder shareholders of the newly established electricity exchange will be based in Budapest and Belgrade, and the project is open to interested additional partners.
