Hungary: Gas interconnection with Serbia will deliver gas at the end of next year

Hungary could start taking deliveries of gas via Serbia from October 2021, said Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto after meeting with Serbian Minister of Energy and Mining Aleksandar Antic.

At the meeting, state-owned Hungarian Electricity Works (MVM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Serbian state-owned power utility EPS and gas company Srbijagas on the development of energy interconnections between the two countries.

Minister Szijjarto said that the delivery volume could be even bigger than planned, as Hungary is prepared to make additional developments if delivery companies indicate a demand for more than an annual 6 billion cubic meters.

Preparations are already underway to build a pipeline from the border with Serbia connecting to Hungary’s gas network, and an agreement on an interconnector with the Serbia could be reached soon.

Minister Antic said that further interconnection and strengthening of electricity networks of Serbia and Hungary offer each other benefits both countries, adding that it would be beneficial for the entire region if a regional electricity market could be established.
