United States grants $130 million for Moldova–Romania high-voltage transmission line to boost energy security

The United States has provided a $130 million grant to support the construction of a new high-voltage transmission line linking Moldova and Romania. The 190-kilometer Straseni–Gutinas line aims to enhance Moldova’s energy security while strengthening cooperation with the US.

Once completed, the transmission line will integrate Moldova more fully into the European electricity network. It will complement the Chisinau–Vulcanesti line, expected to be completed later this year, as well as the planned Balti–Suceava connection. Moldovan President Maia Sandu described the initiative as a key milestone for the country’s long-term energy resilience and international partnerships.

The US Embassy in Chisinau emphasized that the project will improve Moldova’s electricity infrastructure and create opportunities for American companies. The transmission line is expected to facilitate the deployment of advanced US technologies in areas such as network optimization, information and communication systems, transport infrastructure, nuclear energy, and battery storage solutions.

US support for the interconnection project reflects its strategic interest in remaining a major player in the region’s energy and technology sectors. Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project is intended to reduce Moldova’s dependence on Russian energy supplies by ensuring stable access to European electricity markets.
