North Macedonia’s energy regulator announced that the new 44 MW Dren wind farm, located in Demir Kapija, has entered its trial phase. Nearly three years after Turkish investor Kaltun Enerji contracted YEO Teknoloji to build the initial section of the project, the facility has become the country’s third operational wind farm.
Between January and November 2025, the North Macedonian electricity network received 210 MW of new renewable capacity. The Dren wind farm contributed 44 MW, while the remainder came from solar installations. With solar capacity reaching 848 MW by the end of 2024, these recent additions push installed solar power beyond the 1 GW mark. In 2024, renewable sources accounted for 55% of total generation capacity and produced 40% of the country’s electricity.
The Dren project consists of nine turbines, divided into two licensed units: Dren 1, rated at 33.6 MW, and Dren 2, rated at 9.6 MW. Each unit is equipped with Goldwind 4.8 MW turbines.
