Europe: MED9 nations unite to transform mediterranean into renewable energy hub

After a meeting in Cyprus, representatives from nine Mediterranean EU member states—Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain—announced plans to transform the region into a renewable energy hub. They aim to explore cross-border projects and have invited the European Commission to collaborate in assessing specific opportunities and challenges.

As part of this initiative, Cyprus and Greece have agreed to work together on the Great Sea Interconnector project, which will establish a subsea electricity cable linking Cyprus to continental Europe. This project aims to reduce the island’s energy isolation, as it currently relies heavily on heavy fuel oil for electricity generation.
