Greece: In the first half of 2020, 285,000 residential consumers switched electricity suppliers

A total of 285,000 residential consumers in Greece switched electricity supplier in the first half of 2020, according to electricity market data. Of the 285,000 residential consumers who switched suppliers in the first half of the year, 208,000 left PPC, while nearly 35,000 ended up with a universal supply service provided by the market’s top five suppliers.

The service is provided at higher tariff rates, primarily to residential and small commercial customers rejected by their regular suppliers due to outstanding bills.

Since 2015, when the retail electricity market was liberalized, 986,000 consumers of 7.58 million in total have switched electricity suppliers. This slow trend kept retail electricity market share of state-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC) at relatively high levels throughout the years. However, it gradually decreased and the company held a 67.61 % share at the end of August.

Customers who decided to switch to independent suppliers have also shown strong loyalty to new suppliers. Just 144,000 electricity consumers have changed their supplier for a second time during the five past years.
